Two Senior Athletes at Splendora High School signed on with colleges on Jan. 15. The signings took place in the high school gym.
A third Senior Athlete will officially take part in signing day on Friday, Jan. 17.
Blake Baker signed with Angelina College, where he’ll continue his baseball career.
“I started high school in Wimberley and moved to Splendora in my junior season, and I got to school the first day of practice. The first practice went well, I got on varsity and things just took off,” said Baker.
Baker said he’s excited about taking this next step.
Baker’s mother, Gina Baker, said Blake started playing baseball when he was four years old. She said she’s excited for her son.
Blake’s father, Jamie Baker, said words can’t even describe how proud he is of his son.
“From the time he (Blake) could stand and run around, he had a bat and ball in his hand, so this is a long time coming,” said Baker. I’m extremely excited and not surprised (Blake is playing in college). I’ve watched him his whole life, and we’re extremely proud and glad that he does get to continue because for a lot of kids, baseball is over after high school.” I’m glad to be able to see him pitch again.”
Paytan Doherty will play baseball at Seward County Community College. Doherty will officially sign on Friday, Jan. 17.
“I’m super excited and it’s an awesome feeling that all the hard work is finally paying off. It’s an amazing feeling, hard to describe,” said Doherty.
Doherty said it’s been a great experience playing baseball at Splendora High School.
“All the coaches care about the players; even coaches who aren’t coaching your sport are concerned about your future. It’s a great environment and I love the people here and it’s a great community.”
McKenzie Lakey, a Senior Softball player, signed with Navarro Junior College.
“I’m really excited because I’ve worked so hard for this, since I was little. I’m just thankful for my parents and everything they’ve done for me to get me to this level.”
