The 15th annual Turkey Trot 5K was held Nov. 23 at Carl Barton Jr. Park. It’s hosted by the City of Conroe Parks and Recreation Department.
Close to 200 participated in this year’s run.
“They just run their 3.1 miles around the park here at Carl Barton and finish up. We have awards for each age group and trophies for the winners,” Conroe Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Coordinator Elizabeth West said. It’s fun, affordable, brings families out here together. We’ve got people of all ages and running abilities, and some people have fun with it and wear costumes.”
One of the groups that participated call themselves the “Weight Loss Chicks.” They’re a group of ladies from The Sanctuary of Cleveland Church.
“We are doing a weight loss group, and we started in October,” said Dedra McCracken. We actually have a group of ten, but the other five couldn’t make it. We’re just here having fun, and hopefully lose some weight.”
Another group that participated is an after-school program from Armstrong Elementary in the Conroe ISD.
Coach Jason Keron runs the program with Pablo Balon.
“It’s just a chance to get kids acquainted with another hobby, and something for them to do after school that’s healthy and builds self-esteem,” Keron said. It was kind of a take on the girls on the run program that we also do at Armstrong.” I think we have about five today that are going to be here, and normally it’s a group of about ten or eleven after school.”
