This is the third year the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is holding Operation Blue Elf.
“It’s an outreach to help the less fortunate kids in the community. Throughout the year, or really in the second half of the year, we reach out to a lot of school counselors to try and identify children in need,” said Sheriff’s Specialist Lee Knudsen. Based off of that, there’s a registration process with a wish list for each child that the counselors will get back to us.”
Knudsen said at some point, the Sheriff’s Office goes shopping, and tries to match up specific gifts that were asked for to specific children. Last year, the Sheriff’s Office provided gifts for about 1,000 kids.
“Blue Elf, it’s more than just a toy drive, it’s also an event that we hold, like a winter wonderland, Santa’s kingdom, that type of thing. Last year, we had Santa and Mrs. Claus, we had elves, a train, face-painting stations.” It was also an opportunity for us to display some of our equipment and stuff that we use that children always love to climb around, look at and sit in and all that good stuff,” Knudsen said.
The Blue Elf event is Dec. 14, and donations are being accepted through Dec. 8.
