The Montgomery County Historical Society handed out the William Harley Gandy award to Jean Smoorenburg and Jane Keppler during the Nov. 19 Montgomery County Commissioners Court meeting.
Historical Society Chairman Larry Foerster said the award is named for William Gandy, a noted author of Montgomery County history, who served as the first chairman of the County Historical Society. Foerster said the winner of the award must have shown significant accomplishments in the field of historical preservation and research.
Foerster said for over 20 years, Jean Smoorenburg and Jane Keppler have volunteered their time to archive and preserve much of the history of Montgomery County, as volunteers with the “Tex-Gen Web Project,” which is an important grassroots all-volunteer genealogical/historical effort to research, archive and preserve the history of each Texas County.
