The Texas United for Freedom Foundation, or TUFF, is holding their Cooking 4 Courage event at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Nov. 8-9 to raise funds for, bring awareness and to honor veterans, active military and first responders.
The funds raised from the event are used for veterans’ PTSD recovery, re-acclamation and employment as a civilian and other local veteran/first responder supported causes.
TUFF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Montgomery County. The board and volunteers are made up of a group of Patriotic Texans, who TUFF Officials say understand that freedom comes with responsibilities, and they share a common interest to support the people who serve to keep us safe and free.
TUFF assists and raises awareness of the battles military officials face after their service is complete. They do this by arranging and organizing community events, that will give citizens a chance to show their appreciation and support to veterans and first responders.
Cooking 4 Courage features a barbeque cookoff, which Tuff Officials say is the second largest in Montgomery County, as well as guest speakers, food and craft vendors, carnival games, TUFF Kids Cook-off and live and silent auctions.
The local VFW Post 4709 is sponsoring a free veterans dinner, open to all veterans.
Last year, 92 teams competed in the barbeque cookoff to receive $10,000 in cash and prizes, according to TUFF officials. Beneficiaries of Cooking 4 Courage include the TUFF Foundation, Lone Star Survivor Foundation, VFW Post 4709 and Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare.
“Cooking 4 Courage has been and will always be one of our favorite events,” said the 2018 Grand Champion Team, Wholey Smoked Cookers. “Being a veteran run team, we believe our men and women who sacrifice everyday deserve the best opportunities possible.” “Cooking for Courage is a fun, family oriented and honoring way to assist in providing those opportunities that our heroes may not otherwise be afforded.” “Our win will always be the pinnacle or our journey.”
TUFF officials said barbeque teams will auction off their brisket to the crowd to see who will win in the brisket category. If your brisket team wins first through third place, the buyer receives 60 percent of the winnings, the winner gets 20 percent and the balance remains with the TUFF Foundation.
Cooking 4 Courage also includes a Veteran’s Day Ceremony with a flyover.
Admission is $5 for the public, and children 12 and under get in free, as well as all veterans, military and first responders.
