National First Responders Day honors the men and women who are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency, such as an accident, natural disaster or terrorist attack.
First Responders are paramedics, EMTs, police officers, firefighters and rescuers.
Conroe Fire Chief Ken Kreger said ever since 9-11 first responders have gotten a lot of recognition.
“These days like this, even though the first responders like to lay low and not draw attention, these days kind of send that message strong, that people are thinking about you and appreciate what you do, and the things you have to see and put up with,” Kreger said.
Kreger said he hears “thank you for your service” just about every time he is in uniform and someone passes by.
