The theme for this year’s Pumpkin Bobbing event through the City of Conroe is “Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Pumpkin Bob.”
Billy Pounds, Conroe Aquatic Center Program Coordinator, said the Wizard of Oz is this year’s theme because the movie was re-released in theatres this year to celebrate its 80th anniversary.
“Basically the first hour (of the bobbing event) is all games. This year we’ll have a game of tossing a Frisbee to a scarecrow, corn-hole boards, flying monkeys off the diving board contest,” Pounds said.
Many of the children who attend the event every year dress up in Halloween costumes, but should remember they will be swimming in swimming suits.
The pumpkin bobbing will start at 7 p.m., after all the other activities.
“We put the pumpkins into the pool,” Pounds said. “Younger kids can just go in and get their floating pumpkin, and take it out to the decorating area. The older kids, 10 and older, we actually put blindfolds on them and they have to fight the waves and the splashes created by our lifeguards and our swim instructors. They end up getting their own pumpkin, and everyone then goes to the pumpkin decorating area, they decorate it how they wish, and we take pictures at the end.”
Pounds said it costs $10 per participant, and everyone gets to leave with their own decorated pumpkin.
Pounds said 25 kids participated last year, and they hope to get 35 kids this year.
The Pumpkin Bob event is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, at the Conroe Aquatic Center, located at 1205 Candy Cane Lane.
