Splendora students send birthday cards to 100-year-old Texas veteran

A 100-year-old resident of Watauga, Texas, asked people via social media to send him birthday cards. Splendora Junior High School students sent him more than 200 cards.

Happy 100th birthday, Jim South!

After a recent news story was shared about Jim South, a 99-year old Watauga, Texas veteran, wanting 100 birthday cards for his 100th birthday, Splendora Junior High history teacher Shelle Billingsley said, “Challenge accepted!”

Billingsley was tagged in a post on social media by her sister and immediately sent the link to others in Splendora ISD. She hoped the combined forces would flood the Texas vet with birthday cards.

The staff and students did not disappoint. Students from Splendora Junior High sent 213 cards last week to celebrate Mr. South’s birthday!  James (Jim) South turns 100 on Oct. 7 and joined the US Army in 1940. South was deployed to Normandy just seven days after D-Day.
