Montgomery County medics, fire crew and sheriff’s office honored for saving women and child

Medics from the Montgomery County Hospital District, crews from Caney Creek Fire and Rescue and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office received a commendation Monday for their teamwork in responding to an ATV crash involving two women and a child that happened on July 6 of this year.

They received Dr. Robert Dickson’s Meritorious Unit Commendation, which recognizes teamwork. Dickson is the Hospital District’s Medical Director. This was first time the award was presented.

Misti Willigham, public information officer for the Hospital District, says Dickson, who oversees the medics and the fire departments in the County, wanted to recognize and honor teamwork between paramedics and the fire departments.

Dickson gives an award out once a month for clinical excellence.

Willingham said on July 6, a grandmother, her granddaughter and her grandmother’s friend were riding on an ATV in the Caney Creek area. The grandmother, who was driving, turned down into a ditch to get to a riverbed, lost control and the ATV overturned. Willingham said the grandmother and her friend were thrown from the vehicle, but the friend was okay. The granddaughter had a seatbelt on and was also okay.

The grandmother was taken by ground ambulance to an area hospital, where she was treated and later released.

Hospital District officials said not one member of the team of medics, fire crew or Sheriff’s Office hesitated to pitch in where they were needed at the accident, regardless of the task.
